FRAGRANCE: PLUNGE INTO THE COOL OF SUMMER

The temperature is rising, the sun is at its zenith and humidity in urban areas is at its lowest, making us feel uncomfortable. You're dreaming and feeling the need to cool off. Now's the time to plunge into the wake of fresh, fragrant notes.

First of all, store your winter perfumes and opulent fragrances in a cupboard away from light and preferably in the coolest room - the cellar might be a good idea!

Historically, fresh fragrances have been known as HESPERIDEES. History tells us that the Garden of the Hesperides, of Greek mythological origin, was located at the western limit of the world. This divinely scented garden of immortality was reserved for the gods. The historic site of the three nymphs, it was part of one of the twelve tasks Hercules had to perform: ‘Bring back the golden apples from the Garden of the Hesperides guarded by Ladon’. The golden apples represented the oranges that were impossible to find during the Greco-Roman era.

More recently, citrus fragrances were the first perfumes created in the 18th and 19th centuries by Jean Marie Farina under the name ‘Eaux de Cologne’. Napoleon Bonaparte was crazy about them and used them immoderately!

The composition of Hespéridés fragrances is based on pome fruits, such as lemons, oranges, clementines, sweet oranges and grapefruit, as well as kumquats, yuzu, limes and citron.

Among these citrus fruits, the bergamot is the benchmark for scents. The tree that produces it is a natural cross between the lemon and the sour orange (small bitter oranges used in jams by the English, of which they were so fond). The sour orange tree can live up to 600 years, It is therefore an interesting plant that also has medicinal properties.

Recently married to a lemon tree, this child is the perfect pupil, scoring 20 out of 20! Its fruit, and particularly its skin, is highly fragrant. It has many facets. Cold processed, it can be used differently depending on the ripeness of the fruit and the terroir. Picked green, in the south, it expresses and develops the freshness and acidity in the flavours. Picked yellow, further north, the note is unique and very refined, floral and full.

The best production of this fragrance is in Calabria, on a 140 km stretch of coastline in southern Italy, where the mild Mediterranean climate suits it perfectly. It's known there as ‘Calabria's green gold’. It's an olfactory experience of a lifetime: witnessing the production of this fragrant essence. The pleasure of the raw, powerful scent intoxicates you to the very depths of your being. You're at the heart of the fragrance, hovering on a cloud of fragrant molecules - it's divine!

Citrus fragrances are characterised by freshness, acidity, tonicity and lightness. Our suppliers pick and process these fragrant fruits for you, in the middle of winter. Once the scent is in the box, the perfumer, the perfume cook, adds a few ounces of floral notes, a pinch of a beautiful woody trail to prolong this moment of happiness and the olfactory magic takes place.

Fresh fragrance is a personal luxury that invites olfactory enjoyment for oneself. It can also satisfy a need for sparkle and joy. These fragrances blend with the scent of your skin to express who you are and certainly to enhance your style. It's a subtle and refined transformation accessory. Don't deprive yourself, especially in summer.

Among our favourites on the podium: Bergamote by The Différente Company - Eau d'Adrien by Goutal - Pamplona by Guerlain. The best mixed and fresh fragrance goes to Nicolaï for its Eau Mixte. The most elaborate and original is undoubtedly Des Clous pour une Pelure by Serge Lutens, a real olfactory creation. Get to know these unique fragrances, discover their descriptions on our online site or come and smell them in our perfume shops in Thann or Mulhouse.

Beyond the hesperides, the fresh, fragrant note can also be tamed by other plants, or other accords: green with the world of aromatic leaves or floral with lavender or lavandin, as well as the marine note that appeared a few years ago. But that's another story I'll be writing about later, perhaps next year, when the fine weather arrives, depending on the mood of the moment.

If you enjoyed these few words, please leave us a comment below to support the emotional values of perfumery that we uphold.

France has been the country of perfume since the 16th century. Raw materials, handpicked one by one, used to arrive from all over the world, back then, on muleback, horseback, or by sailboats braving winds and seas.

Today, large financial groups have taken over the industry and hold only one value: making money by maximizing their investments as quickly as possible. This is destroying all the charm and French craftsmanship in favor of globalization! The money you give them evaporates thousands of miles away, funding investments in the countries where they seek to expand!

We look forward to sharing another scented article with you soon or welcoming you on your next visit to our perfumeries.
